Signs You Need Emergency Heating Repair
Not every heating problem is an emergency, but some can’t wait. Call us right away if you notice any of these:
- No heat at all. The thermostat is calling for heat, but the furnace or heat pump won’t start, or it runs and only blows cold air.
- A gas smell or a sulfur (rotten egg) odor. Leave the house first and call your gas utility or 911 from outside. Once the utility clears the home, we can repair the cause.
- Your carbon monoxide alarm is going off. Get everyone outside and call 911. A cracked heat exchanger or blocked flue can send CO into living spaces.
- Burning, electrical or smoky smells that don’t go away after the first few minutes of the season.
- Loud banging, grinding or screeching coming from the furnace or blower.
- The system keeps shutting off a few minutes after it starts (short cycling), or the breaker keeps tripping.
- Indoor temperatures are dropping below about 55°F, which puts pipes in exterior walls and crawl spaces at risk of freezing.
If you’re unsure whether it can wait until morning, call us. We’ll help you decide. For anything you can handle yourself, our furnace repair page covers common, non-urgent issues.
What to Do While You Wait for a Technician
A few quick checks can sometimes restore heat, and a few precautions keep your home safe until we arrive:
- Check the thermostat. Make sure it’s set to Heat, set a few degrees above room temperature, and has fresh batteries.
- Check the breaker and furnace switch. A tripped breaker or a furnace switch that was turned off by mistake is a common cause of no heat.
- Look at the air filter. A badly clogged filter can make a furnace overheat and shut down. Replace it if it’s dirty.
- Clear vents and outdoor intake pipes. Snow and ice can block high-efficiency furnace vents on the side of the house.
- Protect your pipes. Open cabinet doors under sinks on exterior walls and let faucets drip slightly.
- Use space heaters carefully. Keep them at least three feet from anything that can burn and never leave them running unattended.
Don’t open the furnace cabinet, relight a gas burner you’re unsure about or reset the system over and over. Repeated resets can make the damage worse.
Emergency Repairs for Every Type of Heating System
Our technicians carry common parts on the truck so many repairs can be finished on the first visit. We repair:
- Gas and electric furnaces: failed igniters, flame sensors, blower motors, control boards, pressure switches and limit switches.
- Heat pumps: units stuck in defrost, failed reversing valves, frozen outdoor coils and backup heat strips that won’t engage.
- Boilers: circulator pumps, ignition problems and pressure issues.
- Ductless mini splits and geothermal systems.
If your system is older and the repair doesn’t make financial sense, we’ll tell you honestly and walk you through furnace replacement options, with financing available.
